Cephalometric X-rays are one of the advanced imaging technologies used at Hacienda Heights Family Dentistry. Cephalometric X-rays are a type of extraoral imaging, which means that nothing needs to be inserted into your mouth. Instead, all images can be taken from outside of your mouth!
Cephalometric X-ray devices consist of a specially adapted panoramic imaging device. This panoramic device has a mechanical arm with a film holder attached to it, which rotates around your head to capture a complete image of your entire orofacial structure. This process can be completed in just a couple of minutes. The images captured are then transmitted instantly to a nearby monitor and magnified up to 30 percent for easy viewing. This makes it easy for our dentist to diagnose tooth decay, oral diseases, injuries and other problems. Cephalometric X-rays also make it easy to plan treatments to restore your oral health.
Some of the images captured by cephalometric X-rays include:
- Your nasal and sinus passages
- Your jaw, mouth and head
- The side profiles of your face
- A view of the jaw as related to your cheekbones
- Measurements of your teeth
- Jaw position for identifying bad bites
- Any fractures or other injuries present in your teeth and jaws
Cephalometric X-rays are extremely safe. Digital imaging reduces radiation exposure by up to 80 percent, and cephalometric imaging further reduces this exposure. All imaging devices are examined regularly to ensure that they function properly and are safe for use.
